Weyburn Comprehensive School is looking to inspire their students for career options once they don the cap and gown with the annual Career Fair this Wednesday, October 29th.
Trent Whippler, Career Development Counselor at the Weyburn Comprehensive School, says it’s a great opportunity for students to network and meet potential future employers.
“It’s mostly aimed at our grade 9 to 12 students and their parents. And it’s an opportunity to explore kind of your options for the future. We’ve got post-secondary schools, colleges, and universities from across Western Canada, and we also have a number of local employers coming as well, setting up a booth in the Cugnet Centre. And it gives students an opportunity to come out and talk face to face with people if they’re interested in a particular career or still just exploring options, it’s nice for students to know what’s out there.”
Taking place at the Cugnet Centre from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., 68 booths featuring local businesses and post-secondary institutions will be there answering questions and introducing themselves to the next generation of workers.

As students enter their final years of high school, career counselors talk with students to help map out their future and find what will inspire them for their career choice. While many of the students have a good idea of what they want to do after school, the Career Fair is a great way for them to connect with possible future employers to learn more about the industry.
However, there are a lot of students who are unsure of what path to take once the graduation ceremony concludes, or even as Whippler says, some students who thought they knew what they wanted to pursue after school but ended up switching thanks to the Career Fair.
“Yeah, and that has happened where a student walked in a couple of years ago thinking, I’m going to do one thing and then talk to one of the professors or instructors, and then they changed what they were applying for because they said, this is exactly what I want to do, so that’s cool.”
This also provides a great opportunity for businesses and post-secondary institutions to scout and recruit students. Whippler mentions there are a lot of students who end up walking away from the Career Fair with more knowledge about the businesses, post-secondary institutions, and the careers they provide that they otherwise may not have known about.
While the Career Fair is intended for Grade nine to 12 students attending Weyburn Comprehensive School; it is free to attend for all ages for those who may be unsure of what to pursue when it comes to a career. As well, Whipper says there’s no commitment to stay for the full three hours, so that way if you have a good idea of who you want to talk to, you can just chat with them directly.
